the timber

a rattlesnake startled, concealed by the leaves

each twitch of her tail pleads “just leave me be”

despite bearing means to take away life

she hopes that a warning will more than suffice

carefully consider which battles to take

the possession of power may warrant restraint

there’s a time to address, and a time to make peace

but we needn’t confuse giving grace with defeat
